Rainy days are not necessarily gloomy and sad. You could still don your wet weather gear and bring the dogs out for a walk/run/hike.
Make rainy days enjoyable for you and your dogs by taking note of a few things:
- Puddles of water are potential source of diseases, such as Leptospirosis and Giardiasis. Leptospirosis causes liver and kidney failure. Giardiasis leads to severe watery diarrhea. Get your dogs vaccinated up-to-date against Leptospirosis and refrain from letting them drink water from the ground as much as possible.
- Keep their coat clean and dry after the walks. Wet and matted coats may potentially trigger skin infection. Also, this will be a good time to check for ticks. It is recommended to apply tick prevention regularly during the wet season to prevent tick infestation.
- Keep their feet clean and dry post-walks. It is important to check in between toes for any foreign material (rock, grass, glass, insect etc.) which may cause irritation and pain. You may consider getting shoes/booties for your dogs.
Please check with your veterinarian if you have any concerns.
Have a great Summer!
